Patience in the Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having patience isn\u2019t easy, especially in our \u201con demand\u201d society. Patience might be one of the most difficult fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5 to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scripture on patience typically revolves around the same theme\u2014trust in the Lord in all circumstances. We often hear the phrase \u201cpatience is a virtue,\u201d but if we\u2019re honest, it usually doesn\u2019t feel like a virtue. Instead, patience can seem like a long list of wants or needs that we doubt will ever be fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of our human responses to uncertainty is to force our priorities above God\u2019s. We think that if we could just act in our own strength, we can have what we want. We want to instantly leap to the other side of the transformation, to the end goal, without going through the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We might not do this intentionally, but hard circumstances or our heart\u2019s desires can cause us to rush ahead. It\u2019s hard to sit in discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But maybe in those hard moments, God is working behind the scenes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we force a transformation, it doesn\u2019t end well. Transformation will happen, but it probably won\u2019t have the result we want. It also won\u2019t be healthy unless it\u2019s in God\u2019s timing, because God\u2019s timing is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Scripture, perseverance or steadfastness are associated with the Hebrew and Greek words for \u201cpatience\u201d. This means learning how to trust in the Lord , even when we face difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resistance is the opposite of patience. When we resist God\u2019s plan for our lives, we\u2019re effectively stating that we don\u2019t trust Him enough to wait. We want to have what we want when we want it. Having patience is about giving up control and trusting God\u2019s timing . Fear and frustration enter the picture the moment we stop resting in the fact that we have a faithful<\/a> God who desires the best for our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waiting on God<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If we take a moment and think about it, we wait for little things every day. We wait for our computers to load new software at work, we wait in line for our morning coffee, we wait for our children to settle down so we can read them a bedtime story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we wait for the bigger things in life, something changes. Waiting on God suddenly becomes hard work. We want our relationship restored, our hearts to be healed, our miracle baby to arrive, or our friendship to be renewed. All of these things are worthy and noble pursuits, but we want them to happen instantly and on our timetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve become so used to a culture of busyness that we forget to slow down and rest in the One who exists outside of time and space. His concept of time is much different from ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we\u2019re feeling worn out, it\u2019s an indication that our souls need to find stillness. Prioritizing patience and trusting God\u2019s timing are ways we can find that peace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s easier said than done, but patience is accepting that some things, including timing, are out of our control. Releasing that control to Him frees our hearts to open to His plans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Difficult situations are uncomfortable, and we don\u2019t want to experience the hard moments. But maybe in those hard moments, God is working.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Trust in the Lord with all of your heart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s easy to be patient when you have control. For example, you know when a movie is going to end, and if you want to see a part again, you can just rewind it. Going too slow? Push fast forward. Just not into it? That\u2019s fine\u2014you can turn it off and do what you want instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God asks us to be patient when the remote is in His hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fruit of patience is living out our faith that God will care for us. He\u2019s gracious and knows we will fall short. We live in a fallen world, and He understands patiently waiting on Him may not always be our first response. Scripture on patience points us back to His heart\u2014that we would run to Him in our times of weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God knows the desires of our hearts, and He has good plans for our lives. Our cries haven\u2019t been ignored. He is always listening, always caring, and always demonstrating His love<\/a> toward us. We can prioritize patience and give Him our trust, even while we\u2019re still waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
