{"id":898,"date":"2023-03-28T12:53:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T12:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chministries.org\/?p=898"},"modified":"2024-05-17T14:57:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T19:57:58","slug":"fruit-of-the-spirit-goodness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chministries.org\/blog\/fruit-of-the-spirit-goodness\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodness of God"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-constrained wp-block-column-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/shareArticle?mini=true&amp;url=https:\/\/community.chministries.org\/blog\/fruit-of-the-spirit-goodness\"><\/a>Galatians 5:22-23 ESV talks about the fruits of the Spirit, with goodness being one of them. In today\u2019s language, we use the word \u201cgood\u201d so much that it\u2019s almost meaningless. Goodness is the Holy Spirit\u2019s work in us as we become more Christ-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bible verses about the goodness of God<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What does the Bible say about goodness? Each fruit of the Spirit comes from God and God alone. As Jesus said in Mark 10:18 ESV, \u201cNo one is good except God alone.\u201d It\u2019s written in God\u2019s character and translates out to all God\u2019s creation\u2014God is good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scripture makes this clear with these Bible verses on the goodness of God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James 1:17 ESV, \u201cEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psalm 25:8 NLT, \u201cThe LORD is good and does what is right; He shows the proper path to those who go astray.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psalm 100:4-5 ESV, \u201cEnter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name! For the LORD is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All good things and blessings in this life come straight from God, who is the epitome of goodness. It\u2019s important we understand this to fully grasp how His goodness relates to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goodness in the Bible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since God is the author of all goodness, any goodness in us is a gift from God. In fact, He created us for goodness. Ephesians 2:10 ESV says, \u201cFor we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biblical goodness can only come from the Holy Spirit. Our human \u201cgoodness\u201d doesn\u2019t measure up without the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is renewal in Christ, and through Him, we can achieve goodness. Titus 2:11-14 ESV says, \u201cFor the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people\u2026 to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works.\u201d The Holy Spirit is training us to be more Christ-like and to be more receptive of the good works prepared for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t have faith without good works. This doesn\u2019t mean that our salvation comes through our good works, but that good works are a natural progression of our faith. A life lived in the flesh is incompatible with the Holy Spirit and can\u2019t glorify God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While our good works don\u2019t lead to salvation or influence our salvation, they\u2019re a clear indication of our faith and our Spirit-filled life. As James 2:26 NLT explains, \u201cJust as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is good\u2014that\u2019s His nature. When we\u2019re saved, the Holy Spirit then fills us with His goodness. And as we are filled with His goodness, it naturally overflows into good works.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-default has-offwhite-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-51bc8053 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-radius:0px;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-constrained wp-block-column-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>There\u2019s no shortage of needs. The more you look for ways to do good to those around you, the more opportunities you\u2019ll find.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-constrained wp-block-column-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Titus 3:1 calls us to be \u201cready for every good work,\u201d but what does that look like? There are ways we can train ourselves to reflect God and be ready for the good works prepared for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prayer time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First\u2014and most importantly\u2014we need to pray, asking for the Holy Spirit to fill us. In Acts 4, when the apostles faced persecution, they came together and asked for boldness to speak out the name of Jesus. Verse 31 records that after they prayed, the place where they were gathered \u201cwas shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know when we come to God with requests that align with His will, He will grant them. 1 John 5:14-15 NIV says, \u201cThis is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us\u2014whatever we ask\u2014we know that we have what we asked of Him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s certainly God\u2019s will that we are filled with His Spirit. Ask for God to provide you with the opportunities to perform the good works He has prepared for you, and He will be faithful in providing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Serve others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need a place to start, look to the needs of your brothers and sisters in Christ. Galatians 6:9-10 reminds us to do good to everyone\u2014but especially to our fellow Christians\u2014and Titus 3:14 encourages us to \u201clearn to devote [ourselves] to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no shortage of needs. The more you look for ways to do good to those around you, the more opportunities you\u2019ll find. Even providing emotional support and a listening ear goes a long way. Opening up your home and fellowshipping with fellow believers can be a great encouragement and opportunity to uplift each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Righteousness from God<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What \u201clittle\u201d sin is rooted in your life? Whether that is quarreling, white lies, or something else, we\u2019re called to devote ourselves to good works but equally to avoid \u201cfoolish controversies, genealogies, dissension, and quarrels about the law\u201d [Titus 3:8-11, ESV].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message is clear\u2014being argumentative and divisive is the opposite of goodness. We\u2019re meant to be courteous to all people, and that\u2019s nearly impossible to achieve if we\u2019re in constant contention with everyone. Our hearts need to be geared towards peace and humility to be truly good to those around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should always seek to glorify God foremost through our actions.
